Tokyo City

Tokyo was originally known as Edo , meaning estuary. Its name was changed to Tokyo when it became the capital in 1868. The population of Tokyo City is about 12.6 million. The largest ethnic group is Japanese but the five most common foreign nationalities found in Tokyo are Chinese, Korean, Filipino, American and British. Tokyo lies in the humid subtropical climate zone with hot humid summers and generally mild winters with cool spells. Annual rainfall averages 1,380 mm (55 inches), with a wetter summer and a drier winter. Tokyo also often sees typhoons each year, though few are strong. The last one to hit was " Fitow " in 2007. In Tokyo, the most famous place is Tokyo National Museum, the country's largest museum and specializing in traditional Japanese Art.Many different festival occur throughout Tokyo. Major events is the biennial Kanda Festivals. Tokyo has many universities, junior colleges, and vocational schools. Many of Japan's most prestigious universities are in Tokyo, the University of Tokyo being the most prestigious of all. Nowadays, Tokyo is one of the three world finance "command centres", along with New York and London. Tokyo has the largest metropolitan economy in the world.
