Tokyo-Japan's largest city

Tokyo is the de facto capital of Japan. Tokyo is located on the eastern side of the main island Honshu. Tokyo is unique among the prefectures, providing certain municipal sevices characteristic of a city. Tokyo it's highest population, while that of the 23 ward peak official count was 8,893,094 in the 1965 Census, with the count dipping below 8 million in the 1995 Census. Tokyo was originally a small fishing village named Edo meaning estuary. It's name was changed to Tokyo when it became the de facto imperial capital in 1868. Tokyo lies in the humid subtropical climate zone, with hot humid summers and generally mild winters with cool spells. Annual rainfall averages 1380 mm, with a wetter summer and a driver winter. Tokyo has numerous outlying island, which extend as far as 1850 km from central Tokyo because of the island's distance from the administrative headquarters of the metropolitan government in Shinjuku, local offices administer them. There are many universities, such as University of Tokyo being the most prestigious of all. Tokyo also has many museums like Tokyo National Museum, the country's largest museum and specializing in traditional Japanese art.
